Strategies To Protect Yourself Against Identity Theft

Identity theft is a serious crime that is growing each year. If you’re a victim of identity theft you may spend months, even years, trying to repair a ruined credit history. A seriously damaged credit report can compromise your chances of getting a new job, a bank loan, insurance or even rental housing. It’s even possible to be arrested for a crime you didn’t commit if someone else has used your identity to break the law. Unfortunately, many of the methods that thieves use to steal identities are beyond your control to guard against. Although it’s rare, even store clerks have been known to use their position to pass along information to identity thieves. There are some measures you can take, however, that will make it harder for a thief to steal your identity.

Protect Your Credit Card Number When Making Purchases After you make a purchase and your credit or debit card has been swiped through a credit card terminal, check to make sure that the printed receipt hides all but the last 4 digits of your credit card account number (usually there will be Xs in place of the first 12 digits). Some terminals still print receipts that show all 16 digits of an account number, and may even include the expiration date as well. After your card is swiped, you’re permitted by law to hide the first 12 digits of your account number on the copy of the receipt that the vendor keeps. Use any marking pen that will do the job. When you go to a restaurant, it’s especially important to make sure that the first 12 digits of your credit card number are hidden on your receipt. You might be in the habit of signing it and then leaving the restaurant’s copy on the table after your meal. An identity thief can easily steal the signed receipt before the waitperson comes back around to pick it up from the table. Don’t take any chances. Do You Really Need To Give Your Social Security Number? Another important way that you can guard against identity theft is to avoid giving out your social security number unless it’s absolutely required. Although you need to share your social security number when you apply for credit or for a bank account, sometimes a store or an organization will want to use it as an ID number, simply to identify you within their system. This is a common practice even though the law says that social security numbers aren’t to be used as ID numbers. In these situations, use your judgment. There’s usually an alternative if you ask. Destroy Documents That Contain Sensitive Personal Information Buy a paper shredder and use it to destroy documents you’re throwing away which contain personal information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, phone numbers and dates of birth. This is important to do both at home and at work. Identity thieves aren’t above going through someone’s trash to find valuable personal information that can help them obtain credit in your name. If The Worst Happens If you do become a victim of identity theft, take the following steps immediately: Contact your credit card companies, close your accounts and ask to have new cards issued to you. Place a fraud alert on your file with any one of the three major credit bureaus. The other two will be notified automatically. File a police report. You may need it to show to creditors as proof of the crime. File a complaint with the FTC, which maintains a database of identity theft cases used by law enforcement agencies for their investigations. The following pages from Strathclyde Associates Police highlight some recent types of fraud which are causing concern and give you advice about how to avoid being a victim. Identity theft is a growing problem. This type of fraud involves criminals accessing your personal information and using it to -˜steal’ your identity. They could even take over your existing accounts and change the supplied address. The result? You could be plunged into a nightmare situation where your credit history is ruined and you have to correct your record. The majority of victims ARE reimbursed by their banks, but it is a terrible experience nonetheless. How the fraudsters operate Fraudsters use a number of methods to obtain your information. They can: · Target flats where shared mail boxes make theft easier · Bribe robbers or postal workers to hand over items containing your information · Search unattended bags · Rifle through your rubbish to find bills or bank statements which you have thrown out. Be alert. There are warning signs to look out for. If you receive bills or invoices for goods you have not ordered, collection letters for debt you have not accrued or there are transactions on your bank/credit card statements that you do not recognise, then you are at risk. Also be aware if important documents, like your passport or driving licence, have been stolen. What You Can Do · Keep all your important documents safe and secure – do not compromise you personal details. · When using a credit or debit card , make sure it is never out of your sight. · Be wary if ATMs look as though they have tampered with, your cards could be skimmed and cloned. · Never reveal your details when you are contacted by phone, fax, post or email if you believe the request not to be genuine. Always offer to ring back any suspicious callers. · Destroy, preferably shred, all documents which may contain your information, such as bank statements and utility bills. · Properly check all your bank/credit card statements and immediately report any transactions you do not recognise (even small amounts). · Formally close all accounts you no longer require. · Move your mail – when moving home. It is vital you notify all relevant organisations of your change of address. If You Think You Are a Victim · Contact your bank or building society and keep a record of all communication. · Call your local police and report the matter – ask for a crime reference number. · Request a copy of your credit report (Equifax or Experian). You can ask for incorrect information to be removed.

Salmon The World’s Favorite Fresh Fish

An attractive rosy pink color, delicious taste and nutritious value makes fresh salmon one of the most popular fish to eat throughout the world. Salmon is a versatile source of protein that can be prepared in a variety of ways and served either hot or cold. It tastes delicious marinated, with slight seasoning or when mixed in a savory sauce. The popularity of using salmon carries through to any mealtime including breakfast joined with scrambled eggs, lunch in a fresh green salad or dinner as an impressive entrée. Salmon is available worldwide and can be purchased fresh, frozen or canned. Types of Fresh Salmon

The life cycle of the salmon is unique and includes time spent in both fresh water and saltwater. Typically these fish are harvested from rivers, lakes and oceans and are not suitable to eat during their spawning period. An increased demand for salmon has caused farming to become a popular production method. Salmon are now produced in larger quantities allowing a lower cost option and greater supply for consumers. The highly nutritious omega-3 properties and healthy source of fatty oils add to a well-balanced diet. Pacific Salmon: The Alaskan waters and northern Pacific coastal areas provide the largest source of wild salmon including the popular King and Coho varieties. Sockeye salmon, famous for the bright red coloration, are typically harvested from this region. These fish are generally larger than other types and can be found in rivers, streams and open ocean waters. Atlantic Salmon: Found along the northern Atlantic coastlines, salmon from this area may be smaller and less colorful than the Pacific varieties but are just as flavorful. Larger lakes, rivers and ocean waters create a suitable habitat for varieties such as the Bay, Black, Silver and others. Many salmon production farms are located along the Atlantic areas. Popular Ways to Prepare Salmon Meals A mild flavor and unique color make preparing salmon a favorite for many chefs. This versatile fish can be eaten warm, cold or at room temperature and is also served raw when prepared properly for sushi dishes. The fish is often added to creamed pasta sauces or used as a meat substitute in patties and loafs. Grilled Salmon: A quick and tasty method, the fish can be marinated or lightly seasoned before grilling. The filets are ready to eat in a short time and leftovers can be used in salads or other dishes. Baked Salmon: The distinct flavor of salmon comes through when baked in a moderate temperature oven and enhanced with light seasoning, bread crumbs, or fresh herbs. Poached Salmon: This method uses a liquid base and gently steams the flesh; often served as a whole fish. Smoked Salmon: Fresh salmon may be cooked in smokers allowing the fish to be kept for longer periods of time. This favorite is used in sandwiches, as in lox and bagels or as an hors d’oeuvre. Sashimi: Experienced sushi chefs choose only fresh salmon and offer thin slices along with wasabi and ginger. Enjoy delicious fish dishes year-round with our taste-tested salmon recipes. Inspired from cuisines around the world, we offer the best salmon recipes for every occasion.

The Thyroid-Diabetes Connection

If you have type 2 diabetes, you should receive a screening for thyroid abnormalities, according to researchers at the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) 20th Annual Meeting and Clinical Congress. The recommendation came after a new study involving over 5,000 people found the prevalence of hypothyroidism to be nearly 6 percent among people with type 2 diabetes, compared to just under 2 percent in those without.Hypothyroidism is a well-recognized risk of type 1 diabetes, but this has generally not been extended to type 2 diabetes as well — until now. What Does Your Thyroid Function Have to do With Diabetes? Both thyroid disorders and diabetes involve a dysfunction of the endocrine system. Type 1 diabetes and the most common cause of hypothyroidism — Hashimoto’s disease — are both autoimmune diseases, and having one autoimmune disease increases your risk of developing another. With type 2 diabetes, coexisting hypothyroidism may increase your risk of heart problems, and the researchers noted that early identification of both conditions could improve heart function, blood pressure and lipid profile. [1]Thyroid hormones also influence glucose homeostasis, including impacting circulating insulin levels, intestinal absorption and uptake of glucose into fat and muscle tissues. [2]Even Subclinical Thyroid Disorder May be Associated With DiabetesPeople with hypothyroidism often struggle with insulin resistance. This is true even at the sub-clinical level. How do you know if your thyroid is functioning at a sub-clinical level?Oftentimes, you don’t.This condition is typically diagnosed when levels of your thyroid hormones are normal but your thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is increased. This is generally a sign that your pituitary gland is working extra hard to keep your thyroid hormone levels up in the normal range. In time, and if left untreated, your TSH levels may continue to increase until your thyroid gland stops responding, and your sub-clinical hypothyroidism turns into full-blown hypothyroidism. It’s a tricky situation because sub-clinical hypothyroidism may cause no symptoms at all, or it may lead to fatigue, memory problems, weight gain, dry skin, constipation and a range of other various problems that may seem completely unconnected. Again, this often undiagnosed and misdiagnosed condition is also associated with insulin resistance, which typically occurs prior to type 2 diabetes. As researchers wrote in Clinical Diabetes: [3]“Thyroid dysfunction is common in diabetic patients and can produce significant metabolic disturbances. Therefore, regular screening for thyroid abnormalities in all diabetic patients will allow early treatment of sub-clinical thyroid dysfunction.”Like sub-clinical hypothyroidism, you can be insulin resistant for years before developing full-blown disease, and often a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is a person’s first sign that they are in fact insulin resistant.Because cases of sub-clinical thyroid disease are often overlooked but may increase health risks for a number of people with co-existing diabetes or insulin resistance (as well as those without), researchers in the British Journal of Diabetes and Vascular Disease recommended “individualization of therapy” as the best solution. What’s the Bottom Line?If you currently have type 2 diabetes, you should be aware of the connection to thyroid disorders like hypothyroidism and sub-clinical hypothyroidism. At the sub-clinical level, many have no symptoms at all, and others are unaware that their fatigue, memory problems and other seemingly unrelated symptoms are due to a thyroid issue. You may need to ask your physician to have this checked, as it is not yet part of the standard of care typically provided for people with type 2 diabetes. But, even if you’ve had your thyroid levels tested and the lab results came back normal, it’s still possible to have a low-functioning thyroid. In fact, the condition is often completely missed due to inadequate testing and a general lack of understanding of the complexities of thyroid function in the conventional medical community. There is some debate over whether or not sub-clinical hypothyroidism needs to be treated at all, and to this I would stress absolutely. At the very least, sub-clinical hypothyroidism can contribute to insulin resistance as well as increase your risk of cardiovascular events if you have type 2 diabetes.Further, many in this early stage of thyroid imbalance will go on to develop full-blown hypothyroidism if action is not taken… and will miss out on the vitality and energy they deserve in life.At least 15 million Americans are thought to suffer from sub-clinical hypothyroidism that may or may not be related to diabetes. Fortunately, dietary approaches and other lifestyle changes can help bring your thyroid function back into the normal ranges, as well as help you to prevent, control and even reverse type 2 diabetes. The guidance of a holistic health care practitioner familiar with both thyroid disorders and diabetes is highly recommended to help you formulate an effective lifestyle plan and stick with it.References1. Rewards of Immigrant’s Heritage Language Transfer

What joys and pleasures are stored in for you, when your future generation settled abroad, speak to you in your heritage language. It is every parents’ pride and joy to see their children amounting into great men and women. It is very fulfilling for every immigrant parent who have left all that they grew up to know behind, venturing into the unknown seeking a better life for themselves and their children. Most immigrant parents will usually sacrifice all in order to see that their children excel in a strange land. It is very fulfilling and greatly rewarding to see these children grow and become successful in their chosen careers. However, being successful as a parent does not come easy. There is a lot of patience, dedication, persistence and sacrifices invested in this venture. Immigrant parents will usually deny themselves of pleasure in order to adequately invest in their children. They work overtime, have little time to rest and give their all into their children’s well being. Immigrant parents work hard to instill their values, belief and culture into their life with the hope that these children will grow up as responsible citizens in the community.Passing on your values and morals to your children includes teaching them your culture. Since your children might not have the opportunity of knowing what is acceptable and not acceptable in your heritage culture, it becomes very imperative that you teach them since the only culture they are familiar with is that which you are presently living in and often times, the cultures and way of life differs from one culture to the other. It becomes very important to teach your children your heritage language so that with that , they will understand the way of life of their community so that they d not become aliens to their own very culture. A child who speaks his parent’s heritage language will definitely understand their values also and with passage of time will make them a strong part of his personality. Immigrant parents who take keen interest in imparting their heritage language to their children find a very peaceful and rewarding life in their old age and see their children grow up to be adults who are respectful and well established in their heritage community.Another reward that comes with you transferring your heritage language is that your heritage link will be kept intact as your children too will pass it on to their own children and so forth. They will keep the culture and language that you so much cherish along with the good moral values that you have passed on to them.Yet the biggest joy is to be able to communicate simple things to your children in your heritage language in a place where you don’t very frequently come across your heritage language speakers and instead of looking around to find a local from your country who shares your culture, you simply look at your own child and talk. You can safely talk with your child in your heritage language and the passersby will not have to know what you both are talking about, that is a moment of close intimacy even when you are among the crowd.

Review – Poisoned for Profit

Poisoned for Profit: How Toxins are Making Our Children Chronically Ill, Philip and Alice Shabecoff, 2010, ISBN 9781603582568Have you wondered why there seems to be an epidemic of serious childhood illnesses, like cancer, asthma and birth defects, in America? It has a lot to do with the huge increase, over the past 50 years, of toxic chemicals dumped into the environment. This book gives the details. There are a number of towns all over the country, ranging from Dickson, Tennessee, to Pittsfield, Massachusetts, to Toms River, New Jersey, suffering much higher than normal numbers of severe childhood illnesses. Each town just happens to also contain a large industrial plant that handles lots of toxic chemicals. Are the illnesses all “isolated instances” or “just one of those things?”The authors say that the CEOs of the major chemical companies are not evil people who deliberately want to poison innocent children, but profit is most important. It is very hard to prove, absolutely, that a particular case of asthma or cancer, for instance, was caused by chemicals from a particular industrial plant, though the circumstantial evidence is pretty strong. The chemical companies use that uncertainty to delay the paying of any fines or cleanup costs.Scientists-for-pay are willing to say what the chemical companies want them to say. The evidence is not conclusive and more study (read: delay) is needed. Washington is no help. Through lobbyists and campaign contributions, it has been made clear to members of Congress that bills to add new regulations are to be watered down or defeated. Only a few of the thousands of chemicals in the environment have been tested at all. Those tests have been very short-term, and have looked at adult exposure to chemicals. The level of toxicity for children and fetuses is much lower. What can a parent do? If you plan on having children in the future, adopt a healthy lifestyle. Get proper amounts of vitamins and minerals, starting today (men and women). If you already have children, let them play outside and open the windows in your house for at least a few minutes a day (to let out any built-up toxins). Stay away from pesticides and dry cleaning, buy organic food as much as possible, buy furniture and flooring made from solid wood instead of particleboard, which is treated with formaldehyde. There are also plenty of websites to visit with safer alternatives to everyday items. This book easily reaches the level of Wow. It is very easy to read, and is quite an eye-opener for all parents and parents-to-be. This is highly recommended.

Step-Parenting Does Your Step Child Call You Mom

Amelia is the wife of Jared who has a two-year old daughter from a previous relationship. Jared has sole custody of his daughter, but his ex-partner gets to see Julia every two weeks.Amelia helps take care of Julia and almost automatically assumes the role of a mother to Julia. She loves Julia as if she were her own daughter.Julia calls her step-mother “mom”, although this is not encouraged. Both Jared and Amelia have tried to explain to Julia who her mom is, but due to her age, does not quite understand.Jared’s ex realises that because her daughter spends most of her time with the dad and his wife, she does not call her mom but refers to Amelia as mom.She is upset about this and makes it known to Jared. Jared explains that he did not ask Julia to call his wife mom – they were just as surprised when she first said it and tried to explain to her who her biological mom is.What can Jared, his ex and Amelia do?This is a very common situation where the child involved is too young to understand the difference between her own mom and her step mom. Here are some steps to take:-Jared:needs to have a chat with Julia to explain in the simplest way possible that though her mom is not living in the same house as the two of them, she is still Julia’s mom and she loves her.
needs to assure his ex that Amelia never knew that Julia would call her mom and she was just as surprised as he was when Julia first said the word and actually has had to correct Julia in the past.
needs to explain to his ex that it may take time for Julia to adjust, but that he would not give up.Amelia:should encourage Julia to call her by her name or depending on the culture, Julia could call her “aunty”. Some people do not mind the step daughter calling the step mom, mom in another language, but then that is if Jared’s ex wouldn’t mind.
though Julia is still very young, Amelia could make a habit of referring to Julia’s mother as “mom” so that Julia would understand
speak to Jared about this and let him know that she knows she can never take Julia’s mom’s place but she would always be there for her Jared’s Ex:needs to exercise a bit of patience
express her love to Julia and not feel awkward because her daughter called Amelia mom
should not force Julia to call her mom The 3 adults involved here need to co-operate among themselves and understand that Julia will not remain two years old forever. She will grow up and gain a better understanding about who her biological mother is and the role of her step mother in her life.
